Summary

FROM THE MAN BOOKER-SHORTLISTED AUTHOR OF EILEEN

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

'Savage, funny, frequently on the verge of teetering into lunacy。。。 My Year of Rest and Relaxation is a non-negotiable in your holiday carry-on this summer' Vogue

It’s the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

Our narrator has many of the advantages of life: Young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate, she lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like everything else, by her inheritance。 But there is a vacuum at the heart of things, and it isn’t just the loss of her parents in college, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her alleged best friend。

Blackly funny, both merciless and compassionate – dangling its legs over the ledge of 9/11 – My Year of Rest and Relaxation is a showcase for the gifts of one of America’s major young writers。

I was so into this book。 Until I read the last two chapters。 A bit of a nothing ending。 Otherwise I enjoyed the main characters cranky snarky attitude。

I was actually surprised by how affected I felt by this when I reached the end。 It feels like a timely read, I think isolation has made me think more and more about what life would look like stripped of all the networks that we have to be apart of to survive and keep up with the world。。。。。 it has in many ways felt like a time where falling off the grid makes more sense than trying to cling to some kind of past normalcy ! Also, here for all the Whoopi worship!!

People warned me that this book was just "fine" but I guess I had to find out for myself。 I 100% agree。 At times, the characters are relatable, but otherwise it isn't anything noteworthy。 People warned me that this book was just "fine" but I guess I had to find out for myself。 I 100% agree。 At times, the characters are relatable, but otherwise it isn't anything noteworthy。 。。。more

This book is about a woman trying to sleep for a year, her pill addiction, her childhood trauma, and I unexpectedly loved it (except for how white, rich, and privileged she was)。 Definitely not everyone’s cup of tea。

This was so。。。 deranged。 I really really liked the writing but that's because I don't mind a lack of plot。。 I think。 Wouldn't recommend this to friends unless they asked me about it first, though。 This was so。。。 deranged。 I really really liked the writing but that's because I don't mind a lack of plot。。 I think。 Wouldn't recommend this to friends unless they asked me about it first, though。 。。。more

I don't know if i read this a right or very very wrong time。 Well。。。 would reccoment if you want to pause your life and be miserable along with the nameless-woman but also laugh- some conversation are just exhilarating。 I don't know if i read this a right or very very wrong time。 Well。。。 would reccoment if you want to pause your life and be miserable along with the nameless-woman but also laugh- some conversation are just exhilarating。 。。。more

Definitely interesting as I reasonated with the narrator about having the whole hibernation period。 It was anticlimactic but I couldn’t put the book down。

Boring, honestly。

Let’s call it 3。5。 Very interesting read, the narrator is horribly unlikeable and everyone seems to make awful choices, so reading it was a bit like watching a car crash — you can’t look away。 The jist of the ending became clear to me when I figured out the timeline, but it was still well done and I wanted to see the author’s take。

CW: mentions of death and suicide, multiple mental health issues, pills/drug use, eating disorders, abusive relationship, explicit sexual content(please check for other content warnings before reading!)In some ways, I resonated with the main character。 She wanted to sleep for a year so that she could revitalize herself and her life - to figure out where she should go from here, or if she should even go anywhere at all。 But beyond that, I found her to be narcissistic, selfish, and mean。 Of course CW: mentions of death and suicide, multiple mental health issues, pills/drug use, eating disorders, abusive relationship, explicit sexual content(please check for other content warnings before reading!)In some ways, I resonated with the main character。 She wanted to sleep for a year so that she could revitalize herself and her life - to figure out where she should go from here, or if she should even go anywhere at all。 But beyond that, I found her to be narcissistic, selfish, and mean。 Of course she had mental health issues and was grieving the loss of her parents, but she was kind of insufferable, although I think that was the point。 I hated some of the author’s language choices and some of the comments made by the MC。 I’m not sure if that was to make her even more unlikable, but some of it didn’t sit well with me。 Also, the book was too long for the premise of the story and the pacing of the storyline was weird for me。 I was prepared to give it 3 stars right up until the last sentence。 That, combined with the above-mentioned not-so-great wording choices and comments, made me bump this down to 2 stars。 And if I wouldn’t have felt a slight connection to the main character’s mental health issues, I probably would’ve given it 1 star。 It wasn’t a terrible read, but probably not something I’d recommend。 But, if you do give it a shot, I recommend doing the audiobook。 The narrator was great and I think that made it more bearable。 If I would’ve read a physical copy, I probably wouldn’t have finished it。 。。。more

Original and fascinating book that eventually becomes predictable and runs out of steam。

A completely unlikeable and unrelatable privileged character, who's on a self destructive path。 Addictive to read though and very honest。 A completely unlikeable and unrelatable privileged character, who's on a self destructive path。 Addictive to read though and very honest。 。。。more

Probably one the most unique books I’ve ever read

This book had a very easy and effortless flow to it。 I wasn't sure how the subject matter would manage to remain engaging to an audience but I was pleasantly surprised。 It was a very interesting story and I was definitely able to relate to the main character at moments throughout。 However, I found the ending extremely predictable and while it was emotionally engaging, it also felt somewhat inauthentic if that makes sense。 Overall I'm glad I read it but don't need to read it a second time。 This book had a very easy and effortless flow to it。 I wasn't sure how the subject matter would manage to remain engaging to an audience but I was pleasantly surprised。 It was a very interesting story and I was definitely able to relate to the main character at moments throughout。 However, I found the ending extremely predictable and while it was emotionally engaging, it also felt somewhat inauthentic if that makes sense。 Overall I'm glad I read it but don't need to read it a second time。 。。。more

a book that captures two different people and the way they deal with their depression。 it’s an odd theme (sleeping to cope with trauma) but it still reads pretty easy。 that shows how much talent the author has。 i just wished that they focused more on the main characters life after her ‘long sleep’。 the last page is so powerful。 didn’t see that one coming。

Kelsey

This book is a slow, painful ride。 I didn’t know how I felt about it until the end - when it ripped my heart out and I decided I loved it。 You have to like character studies and character-driven stories to enjoy it。 You must also be ok with constantly cycling between angry, disgusted and sad。

Misha Sebesta

weird。 but i like it。 it was a bit sadder than i was expecting? i never heard anyone mention just how sad it is until the narrator wakes up。

This book was meh。 Nothing incredible happens but it did entertain me。 I wouldn’t pick this book up in 5 years to reread it, but I also find her bitchy-ness to be captivating
